The Catholic Church has NEVER condoned or taught that these possible mercies are options to pick and choose from as if salvation was a multiple choice. In its orthodox teaching mission and catechesis, the Church has always taught that a person MUST strive for Salvation by being a member of the Catholic Church and baptism by water. The Church has never taught anyone that they might choose invincible ignorance as their option for Salvation. If the Church knew of a person that was ignorant it is incumbent for the Church to explain and tell them the truth on becoming a Catholic. If a person should gain salvation through Baptism of Desire it is NEVER because the Church would offer this to ANY person as a cognizant option. A catechumen who dies before they are baptized must still be in a state of grace before they meet God for judgement. As far as baptism of Blood or martyrdom we would be shocked to know the number who shed their blood and were already members of the Catholic Church. As far as the others who gave their blood we trust in the mercies of God unknown to us.
It is precisely due to the watering down of Church teaching on "No Salvation Outside the Catholic Church" that we are in this crisis of faith.

George BrennerGeorge Brennernoreply@blogger.com
