Bishop Kevin Rhoades, the new Chairman of the USCCB Doctrinal Committee in his radio program 1 makes the same doctrinal error as Cardinal Luiz Ladaria sj at the Placuet Deo Press Conference.

They both have suggested that Vatican Council II mentions there are known people saved outside the Church with 'elements of sanctification and truth' (LG 8). So they will not affirm the traditional exclusivist ecclesiology of the Church.

We now know that the text of LG 8 does not say that there are known Catholics saved outside the Church. This has to be wrongly inferred by the two prelates.
Secondly there can be no practical examples of LG in 2018 which would be an objective exception to traditional extra ecclesiam nulla salus.

Thirdly common sense tells us that LG 8 refers to a hypothetical and speculative case . So it is not an exception or relevant to the teaching on outside the Church there is no salvation, as it was known, for exampple, to the Magisterium and missionaries in the 16th century.

For Bishop Rhoades and Cardinal Ladaria, LG 8 is ' a development' in Vatican Council II with reference to the dogma EENS. Since they assume that LG 8 refers to known non Catholics saved outside the Church.Only in this way it becomes a development.

The same error was made by Pope Benedict XVI in Avvenire in March 2016. He said that EENS was  no more the same as it was in the 16th century. There was a development with Vatican Council II.-Lionel Andrades

(Time on audio 29:00) Bishop Rhoades says Vatican Council II has two documents one on ecumenism, with other Christians and ecclesial communities and the other on our relationship with non Christian religions and it is called Nostra Aetate. It is important for Jewish relations. In that  documents it considers 'elements of sanctification and truth in other religions' (LG 8) he said, making a mistake. He goes on to say that we must respect people of other religions and we respect their religious freedom (30:40)but we are called to uphold the truth of what we hold, of what God has revealed to us in Christ, we are called to love all.

'Elements of sanctification and truth' is referred to in Lumen Gentium 8 and not Nostra Aetate. Nostra Aetate though is often quoted saying other religions 'often reflect a ray of that Truth which enlightens all men.'

So the inference being made here by Bishop Rhoades is that there are non Catholics saved in their religion with 'elements of sanctification and truth' and this is an exception, an objective exception, to the traditional teaching on all needing to be members of the Catholic Church for salvation ( Catechism of Pope Pius X etc).

The inference is false.

The inference is false since there are no known cases of non Catholics saved outside the Church for us.Practically there can be none. Then the text of Vatican Council II ( Lumen Gentium, Nostra Aetate) does not state that there are known cases of non Catholics saved. So again Vatican Council II no where contradicts the strict interpretation of the dogma extra ecclesiam nulla salus(EENS).Nostra Aetate and Lumen Gentium refer to only hypothetical cases.
We can read the text of Vatican Council II and refuse to make the irrational inference.
Theoretically and speculatively a non Catholic can be saved outside the Church with 'elements of sanctification and truth', ' a ray of the Truth which enlightens all men', 'invincible ignorance'(LG 16), ' a good consciene'(LG 16),'imperfect communion with the Church'(UR 3), non Catholics of good will( GS 22 ) etc.In reality there are no such cases known to us humans. They can only be known to God.
When Bishop Kevin Rhoades infers that Lumen Gentium and Nostra Aetate says that we know of non Catholics saved outside the Church it is irrational and heretical.
