Catholic Women Martyrs

Felicitas

Felicitas (101 – 162)
Her life is celebrated on November 23 by both the Roman Catholic and Orthodox Churches. She and her seven sons were all martyred in Rome. Her tremendous conversion efforts were noticed by the pagan priests who then notified the Emperor. Before being martyred, she witnessed the death of each of her sons. The authorities gave her the opportunity to recant her witness after each son’s death, but she refused.

Cecilia

Cecilia (~ 176)
Cecilia was a noblewoman in Rome who vowed with her newfound faith to a life of celibacy. That was not her father’s plan and she was forced to marry instead. Her martyrdom came under Emperor Marcus Aurelius. First, both her brothers were arrested and killed for refusing to sacrifice to the gods. After Cecilia was found to have converted more than 400 people, she was condemned to die by heat (or suffocation) in the Roman baths. The fires were struck and after a full day she didn’t even sweat. An executioner came to behead her. He tried three times but could not complete it. After three days she bleed to her death but never recanted her faith.

Blandina

Blandina (162 – 177)
Blandina also died during the reign of Emperor Marcus Aurelius in the city of Lyon in Asia Minor. Blandina was arrested along with other Christians. She was a slave and not a Roman citizen. This is important because if she were a Roman citizen her death would not include torture. A quick beheading should be her fate. Instead, she withstood so much torture that it is said the perpetrators became tired under her strength. Finally, she was taken to an amphitheatre and bound to a stake. Wild animals were let loose. However, they did not touch her. Days past and finally, she was killed by throwing her in front of a wild steer.

perpetua

Perpetua (- 203)
Perpetua died in modern day Tunisia in Northern Africa (Carthage at the time). It was Emperor Septimius Severus’s son’s birthday and Perpetua was one of several new Christian converts rounded up to celebrate the special day in a display of horrible violence. It’s not known whether Severus was even involved. We do know that he put forward laws against conversion to Christianity. Perpetua ultimately died by directing the gladiator’s sword to her neck after being trampled and gored by bull did not work.

Catherine of Alexandria (287- 305)
At only 18, Catherine was converting hundreds to Christianity. And, when a persecution of Christians broke out, she tried to use her influence as the daughter of the Alexandrian governor to persuade the emperor. She goes to the emperor and accuses him of cruel acts. He can’t believe her boldness and calls for 50 of the best pagan philosophers to debate her over her Christian beliefs. She wins and her fine crafted arguments even converts some of the listeners. She’s imprisoned. 200 visitors come to see her including the emperor’s wife. All are converted to Christianity. She’s condemned to die by the breaking wheel but when she touches it falls to pieces. In frustration, she is finally beheaded.

lucia

Lucia of Syracuse (283 – 304)
The Diocletianic Persecution is also called the Great Persecution because it was the worst. Emperor Diocletian had the goal of wiping away Christianity forever. Lucia was one of thousands and thousands of people killed for their faith between 303 up until the toleration verdict by Constantine in 313. Lucia refused to burn incense in worship of the governor of Syracuse so she was sentenced to die. When the guards came to take her, they couldn’t move her. They tried using an ox but she would not budge. Then, they attempted to light her on fire where she sat, assembling straw around her. She wouldn’t burn. Finally, she died by sword.

Yes, there are centuries between these two entries. Many records of martyred women during this long period are difficult to locate with specificity. No doubt, whole swaths of Christians were killed for their faith during moments of conflict and persecution. As the Reformation unravels the Church, there is also martyrdom perpetrated from one Christian group to another.

Magdalene of Nagasaki

Magdalene of Nagasaki (1611- October 16, 1634)
Magdalene would follow her parents as a martyr. Her parents died in 1620. During this period in Japan, Christianity was outlawed and the penalty was death. Since she was only 9 when she lost her parents, she received much counsel from two Augustinian friars who were also martyred. At the age of 23, she decided to surrender to authorities and publicly declare herself a follower of Jesus. After 13 days of torture, she was strangled to death in a hole upside down.

Narcissa-Whitman

Narcissa Prentiss Whitman (March 14, 1808 – Nov 29, 1847)
Narcissa served as a missionary to the Oregon territory. She was the first white woman to make the journey. She wanted to bring the message of Jesus to the native Cayuse and Nez Perce tribes in what is now Walla Walla Washington. There was already a fort near their mission site and she and her husband Marcus, a doctor, were to care for and evangelize the tribal people. They spent 11 years in ministry. They ended up dying by the hand of Tiloukaikt and his men because of their  suspicion of the white people not dying of measles like his people, something that was more than unfortunate since immunity due to past exposure had everything to do with the reason.

Lucy Yi Zhenmei

Lucy Yi Zhenmei (December 9, 1815 – February 19, 1862)
Lucy was born to a Catholic family in China. She committed her life to Christ at a young age and worked to support her family as well as teaching the women at her parish. She was enthusiastic about evangelism despite the dangers she knew about if the authorities discovered her fervor. In 1861, she worked with Father Wen Nair to establish a mission in Jiashan Long. In that area, the provincial governor began to arrest Christians and ask them to renounce their faith. Father Nair and others in the mission, including Lucy, were arrested and sentenced to death without a trial. They all were beheaded the next day.

Edith_Stein

Edith Stein (October 12, 1891 – August 9, 1942)
As a German Jew who converted to Christianity during the tumultuous time of World War II, Edith soon knew the dangers of her ethnicity and her newfound faith. She became a nun and taught school in Speyer. By 1933, the Nazis passed laws that prohibited any non-Aryan person from civil service. Edith and her sister were moved to a Netherlands monastery for their safety, but in 1942, the Nazis arrested them and sentenced both women to Auschwitz. They died seven days later in the gas chambers.

Missionary Martyrs

Towards the Day of Missionary Martyrs 2023

March 24, 2023 is the thirty-first Day of Missionary Martyrs.

Rome (Italy). March 24, 2023 is the thirty-first Day of Missionary Martyrs, on the date that commemorates the assassination of Archbishop Oscar Romero, which took place on 24 March 1980 in San Salvador.

In 1992, the Youth Movement of the Pontifical Mission Societies, now Missio Giovani, proposed to the Italian Church the celebration of a day that would commemorate those who lose their lives every year during their pastoral service. The young people chose March 24 as the date, so that it was clear that the brothers and sisters killed, since they were faithful to the Gospel until the last moment, are sprouts of a new faith, strengthened by the commitment to take care of those who suffer or are crushed by unjust and poorly inclusive systems.

In 2022, according to information collected by Agenzia Fides, the information body of the Pontifical Mission Societies since 1927, 18 men and women missionaries were killed in the world12 priests, 1 male religious, 3 female religious, 1 seminarian, 1 layman. At the continental level, the highest number is recorded in Africa, where 9 missionaries were killed (7 priests, 2 women religious); followed by Latin America, with 8 missionaries killed (4 priests, 1 male religious, 1 female religious, 1 seminarian, 1 layman; and from Asia, where 1 priest was killed. In recent years, Africa and America have alternated in first place in this tragic ranking: from 2011 to 2021 for 8 years America and for 3 years Africa). From 2001 to 2021, the total number of missionaries killed is 526.

The little information on the life and circumstances that caused the violent death of these 18 men and women missionaries, explains the Fides report, offer us images of daily life, in particularly difficult contexts, marked by violence, misery, lack of justice, and respect for human life”. Other people who were with them often shared the same fate as the missionaries.”

As Pope Francis wrote in his Message for World Mission Day 2022, they are witnesses of Christ who offer their lives to the end:

“The disciples are asked to live their personal lives in the spirit of mission. They are sent by Jesus to the world not only to carry out the mission, but also and above all to live the mission entrusted to them; not only to bear witness, but also and above all to be witnesses of Christ. The essence of the mission is to bear witness to Christ, that is to say His life, passion, death, and resurrection out of love for the Father and for humanity.”

No mission to the Jehovah Witness : In the absence of Church missionary programs which are ecclesiocentric how can lay Catholics in Rome be missionaries?

At the Cornelia Metro Station  I some times see two or three ladies standing at the entrance with booklets of the Jehovah Witnesses  Church. They have bought these booklets with their own money  and give them out free, to anyone who asks for it. Those who are interested are invited for courses on the Bible. Their Bible is different from that of the Catholic Bible. It has been changed by the founder of their religion Charles Russell. He believed that there was exclusive salvation in his sect. There was no Hell for him. This is appealing to new people. They can be baptised with water in the JW church and be sure they are gong to Heaven. They can sin without the fear of going to Hell.

The ladies living out the material are probably ex-Catholics. They have never been told that in the Catholic Church there is exclusive salvation, according to the Bible. The Bible says that the Church is Jesus’ Mystical Body. All need Catholic faith ( John 3:5). All need the baptism of water for salvation ( John 3:5). Those who do not believe will be condemned ( Mark 16:26).

They are not told that the prophet Isaiah mentions Hell and asks who among us can stand a furnace for all time. They are not asked to be missionaries for the Catholic Church, outside of which there is no salvation.

There are also no missionaries to tell them the basic teachings of the Church on salvation.

In the absence of Church missionary programs,  which are ecclesiocentric, how can lay Catholics in Rome be missionaries?  - Lionel Andrades

They can be missionary when they interpret Vatican Council II rationally. They must also reject the second part of the 1949 Letter of the Holy Office (LOHO) and accept the first part of the LOHO.

The Vatican is not missionary.Neither is the Neo Cathechumenal Way of the Kiko Arguello missionary in the traditional sense.Neither are the Missionaries of Charity of Mother Teresa really missionary. They can be missionary when they interpret Vatican Council II rationally. They must also reject the second part of the 1949 Letter of the Holy Office (LOHO) and accept the first part of the LOHO.

We have to choose between the first and second part of the LOHO. The second part contradicts the first part. The second part uses the fake premise and the first part affirms traditional EENS.So the LOHO, in the second half of the Document, rejects the strict interpretation of extra ecclesiam nulla salus (EENS).It creates alleged exceptions. It creates exceptions by confusing what is invisible as being visible. Exceptions out of thin air!

When Pope Francis speaks about Evangelisation  he refers to a Christocentric and not Ecclesiocentric Church. It cannot be ecclesiocentris when there are 'known' exceptions for EENS.

Cardinal Tagle supports a New Ecumenism ( based upon the false premise). He welcomes Protestants in the same Church as the Roman Catholic Church. This is an initial step in creating a new world religion which later will include non-Christians too. The new one world religion will be without the 'burden' of mortal sin and Hell. There will be no mission. Since all religions will be paths to Heaven and there will be no Hell and sin. - Lionel Andrades

FIRST PART

Letter to the Archbishop of Boston

Author: CDF (Holy Office)

LETTER OF THE SACRED CONGREGATION OF THE HOLY OFFICE

Archbishop Richard J. Cushing

Given on August 8, 1949 explaining the true sense of Catholic doctrine that there is no salvation outside the Church.

This important Letter of the Holy Office is introduced by a letter of the Most Reverend Archbishop of Boston.

The Supreme Sacred Congregation of the Holy Office has examined again the problem of Father Leonard Feeney and St. Benedict Center. Having studied carefully the publications issued by the Center, and having considered all the circumstances of this case, the Sacred Congregation has ordered me to publish, in its entirety, the letter which the same Congregation sent me on the 8th of August, 1949. The Supreme Pontiff, His Holiness, Pope Pius XII, has given full approval to this decision. In due obedience, therefore, we publish, in its entirety, the Latin text of the letter as received from the Holy Office with an English translation of the same approved by the Holy See.

Given at Boston, Mass., the 4th day of September, 1952.

Walter J. Furlong, Chancellor

Richard J. Cushing, Archbishop of Boston.

LETTER OF THE HOLY OFFICE

From the Headquarters of the Holy Office, Aug. 8, 1949.

Your Excellency:

This Supreme Sacred Congregation has followed very attentively the rise and the course of the grave controversy stirred up by certain associates of "St. Benedict Center" and "Boston College" in regard to the interpretation of that axiom: "Outside the Church there is no salvation."

After having examined all the documents that are necessary or useful in this matter, among them information from your Chancery, as well as appeals and reports in which the associates of "St. Benedict Center" explain their opinions and complaints, and also many other documents pertinent to the controversy, officially collected, the same Sacred Congregation is convinced that the unfortunate controversy arose from the fact that the axiom, "outside the Church there is no salvation," was not correctly understood and weighed, and that the same controversy was rendered more bitter by serious disturbance of discipline arising from the fact that some of the associates of the institutions mentioned above refused reverence and obedience to legitimate authorities.

Accordingly, the Most Eminent and Most Reverend Cardinals of this Supreme Congregation, in a plenary session held on Wednesday, July 27, 1949, decreed, and the august Pontiff in an audience on the following Thursday, July 28, 1949, deigned to give his approval, that the following explanations pertinent to the doctrine, and also that invitations and exhortations relevant to discipline be given:

We are bound by divine and Catholic faith to believe all those things which are contained in the word of God, whether it be Scripture or Tradition, and are proposed by the Church to be believed as divinely revealed, not only through solemn judgment but also through the ordinary and universal teaching office (<Denzinger>, n. 1792).

Now, among those things which the Church has always preached and will never cease to preach is contained also that infallible statement by which we are taught that there is no salvation outside the Church.

However, this dogma must be understood in that sense in which the Church herself understands it. For, it was not to private judgments that Our Savior gave for explanation those things that are contained in the deposit of faith, but to the teaching authority of the Church.

Now, in the first place, the Church teaches that in this matter there is question of a most strict command of Jesus Christ. For He explicitly enjoined on His apostles to teach all nations to observe all things whatsoever He Himself had commanded (Matt. 28: 19-20).

Now, among the commandments of Christ, that one holds not the least place by which we are commanded to be incorporated by baptism into the Mystical Body of Christ, which is the Church, and to remain united to Christ and to His Vicar, through whom He Himself in a visible manner governs the Church on earth.

Therefore, no one will be saved who, knowing the Church to have been divinely established by Christ, nevertheless refuses to submit to the Church or withholds obedience from the Roman Pontiff, the Vicar of Christ on earth.

Not only did the Savior command that all nations should enter the Church, but He also decreed the Church to be a means of salvation without which no one can enter the kingdom of eternal glory.

In His infinite mercy God has willed that the effects, necessary for one to be saved, of those helps to salvation which are directed toward man's final end, not by intrinsic necessity, but only by divine institution, can also be obtained in certain circumstances when those helps are used only in desire and longing. This we see clearly stated in the Sacred Council of Trent, both in reference to the sacrament of regeneration and in reference to the sacrament of penance (<Denzinger>, nn. 797, 807).

     SECOND PART

The same in its own degree must be asserted of the Church, in as far as she is the general help to salvation.
Therefore, that one may obtain eternal salvation, it is not always required that he be incorporated into the Church actually as a member, but it is necessary that at least he be united to her by desire and longing.

However, this desire need not always be explicit, as it is in catechumens; but when a person is involved in invincible ignorance God accepts also an implicit desire, so called because it is included in that good disposition of soul whereby a person wishes his will to be conformed to the will of God.

These things are clearly taught in that dogmatic letter which was issued by the Sovereign Pontiff, Pope Pius XII, on June 29, 1943, <On the Mystical Body of Jesus Christ> (AAS, Vol. 35, an. 1943, p. 193 ff.). For in this letter the Sovereign Pontiff clearly distinguishes between those who are actually incorporated into the Church as members, and those who are united to the Church only by desire.

Discussing the members of which the Mystical Body is-composed here on earth, the same august Pontiff says: "Actually only those are to be included as members of the Church who have been baptized and profess the true faith, and who have not been so unfortunate as to separate themselves from the unity of the Body, or been excluded by legitimate authority for grave faults committed."

Toward the end of this same encyclical letter, when most affectionately inviting to unity those who do not belong to the body of the Catholic Church, he mentions those who "are related to the Mystical Body of the Redeemer by a certain unconscious yearning and desire," and these he by no means excludes from eternal salvation, but on the other hand states that they are in a condition "in which they cannot be sure of their salvation" since "they still remain deprived of those many heavenly gifts and helps which can only be enjoyed in the Catholic Church" (AAS, 1. c., p. 243). With these wise words he reproves both those who exclude from eternal salvation all united to the Church only by implicit desire, and those who falsely assert that men can be saved equally well in every religion (cf. Pope Pius IX, Allocution, <Singulari quadam>, in <Denzinger>, n. 1641 ff.; also Pope Pius IX in the encyclical letter, <Quanto conficiamur moerore>, in <Denzinger>, n. 1677).

But it must not be thought that any kind of desire of entering the Church suffices that one may be saved. It is necessary that the desire by which one is related to the Church be animated by perfect charity. Nor can an implicit desire produce its effect, unless a person has supernatural faith: "For he who comes to God must believe that God exists and is a rewarder of those who seek Him" (Heb. 11:6). The Council of Trent declares (Session VI, chap. 8): "Faith is the beginning of man's salvation, the foundation and root of all justification, without which it is impossible to please God and attain to the fellowship of His children" (Denzinger, n. 801).

From what has been said it is evident that those things which are proposed in the periodical <From the Housetops>, fascicle 3, as the genuine teaching of the Catholic Church are far from being such and are very harmful both to those within the Church and those without.

From these declarations which pertain to doctrine, certain conclusions follow which regard discipline and conduct, and which cannot be unknown to those who vigorously defend the necessity by which all are bound' of belonging to the true Church and of submitting to the authority of the Roman Pontiff and of the Bishops "whom the Holy Ghost has placed . . . to rule the Church" (Acts 20:28).

Hence, one cannot understand how the St. Benedict Center can consistently claim to be a Catholic school and wish to be accounted such, and yet not conform to the prescriptions of canons 1381 and 1382 of the Code of Canon Law, and continue to exist as a source of discord and rebellion against ecclesiastical authority and as a source of the disturbance of many consciences.

Furthermore, it is beyond understanding how a member of a religious Institute, namely Father Feeney, presents himself as a "Defender of the Faith," and at the same time does not hesitate to attack the catechetical instruction proposed by lawful authorities, and has not even feared to incur grave sanctions threatened by the sacred canons because of his serious violations of his duties as a religious, a priest, and an ordinary member of the Church.

Finally, it is in no wise to be tolerated that certain Catholics shall claim for themselves the right to publish a periodical, for the purpose of spreading theological doctrines, without the permission of competent Church authority, called the "<imprimatur,>" which is prescribed by the sacred canons.

Therefore, let them who in grave peril are ranged against the Church seriously bear in mind that after "Rome has spoken" they cannot be excused even by reasons of good faith. Certainly, their bond and duty of obedience toward the Church is much graver than that of those who as yet are related to the Church "only by an unconscious desire." Let them realize that they are children of the Church, lovingly nourished by her with the milk of doctrine and the sacraments, and hence, having heard the clear voice of their Mother, they cannot be excused from culpable ignorance, and therefore to them apply without any restriction that principle: submission to the Catholic Church and to the Sovereign Pontiff is required as necessary for salvation.

In sending this letter, I declare my profound esteem, and remain,

Your Excellency's most devoted,

F. Cardinal Marchetti-Selvaggiani.

A. Ottaviani, Assessor.

(Private); Holy Office, 8 Aug., 1949.

  1. YOUTUBE VIDEO DOES NOT SAY ALL NEED TO ENTER THE CHURCH BUT ONLY THOSE WHO KNOW ABOUT THE CHURCH
Fra. Joseph Mary FFI of the Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate,USA seems to have succumbed to the propaganda on the secular media on outside the Church there is no salvation and has produced a video on You tube.

His conclusion is that the Catholic Church is founded by Jesus. Man has a moral obligation to seek out this church and to enter it. He says outside of the True Church there is no salvation. “By this we don’t mean that just because (1:34) someone is not a Catholic there automatically is no hope of salvation”.

“Those are outside the Church who know and are convinced that the Catholic Church is the Church which Jesus founded but still don’t become one of her members. Then secondly those are outside the Church who through their own serious neglect don’t realize that the Catholic Church is the Church Jesus founded and they refuse to even consider the Catholic Church’s claim to be the true Church”.

The dogmatic teaching is that all non Catholics need to enter the Church to avoid Hell. This is the official teaching of the Catholic Church for centuries.

The official teaching is that everyone on earth needs to enter the Church and if there is anyone in invincible ignorance as compared to those who ‘know’, then these exceptions will be known only to God.

Those who know and do not enter as compared to those in invincible ignorance are known only to God. The general rule is that every one needs Catholic Faith and the baptism of water to go to Heaven (Ad Gentes 7, Vatican Council II, Cantate Domino, Council of Florence, Dominus Iesus 20 etc). There can be exceptions known only to God.

Fr. Joseph Mary probably believes that Fr. Leonard Feeney was excommunicated for heresy. It is not known if he has read the dogma Cantate Domino. Also Lumen Gentium 16’s reference to non Catholics saved in invincible ignorance does not contradict Cantate Domino or Ad Gentes 7.

Those who ‘know’, those in invincible ignorance and those who are in partial communion with the Church are cases which can only be accepted by us in principle, as a concept. They can never be de facto for us.

Since they are not de facto known to us they do not contradict the ex cathedra dogma Cantate Domino which says every one must be a formal member of the Church.

If only those who know and do not enter are oriented to Hell according to Vatican Council II (Lumen Gentium 14) then LG 14 contradicts Ad Gentes 7 which says all people need the baptism of water for salvation. It would also mean that Lumen Gentium 14 contradicts the dogma Cantate Domino on outside the Church there is no salvation.

    It doesn’t make sense.

It is important that Bro. Joseph read Cantate Domino and compare it with Ad Gentes 7. When he can affirm it then consider the subject, outside the Church there is no salvation.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church 846 says all need to enter the Church as if entering through a door.

So even if there is someone saved in invincible ignorance or the baptism of desire it does not contradict CCC 846 that all need to enter the Church as through a door.

CCC 845 repeats St.Thomas Aquinas in saying that the Church is like the only Ark of Noah that saves in the flood. This is what the secular hostile media calls ‘the rigorist interpretation’ of the dogma.

There can be only one interpretation and the centuries-old interpretation is the same as Vatican Council II (Ad Gentes 7) and the Catechism of the Catholic Church 845,846.

IS THE SSPX MASS VALID? YES, BUT THE PRIEST COULD BE IN MORTAL SIN FOR REJECTING A DEFINED DOGMA WITH HIS ‘EXCEPTIONS’
There are conditions for offering the Tridentine Rite Mass. Are they being met by the SSPX ?

The Society of St.Pius X(SSPX) priests offer the Tridentine Rite Mass and consider the baptism of desire and those saved in invincible ignorance as exceptions to the thrice defined dogma extra ecclesiam nulla salus. They are in the same position as the priests who offer the Novus Ordo Mass in different languages.

However the SSPX claims on its website that they affirm the dogma extra ecclesiam nulla salus. They also imply that those saved in invincible ignorance and the baptism of desire are explicitly known to us and so it is an exception to the dogmatic teaching. This is a denial, a rejection of the dogma.

The baptism of desire is always implicit. It would have to be explicitly known to conflict with the dogma outside the church there is no salvation. Yet this is implied in the articles by Fr.Francois Laisney and Fr.Peter Scott. Since these cases are hidden they are really not exceptions. There are no defacto exceptions. If we consider them as exceptions it would mean we can meet non Catholics on the street saved in invincible ignorance and the baptism of desire. You could say to such a person whom you meet, “ Hi John, I’m glad you were saved with the baptism of desire you arose from the dead and returned to live with us once again. I heard the same thing happened with your sister Francesca”.
    http://eucharistandmission.blogspot.com/2011/11/catholics-are-fighting-it-out-on.html#links

Invincible Ignorance and the baptism of desire are not exceptions to the dogma but explicitly known invincible ignorance and the baptism of desire are exceptions. So one has to imply that the baptism of desire and invincible ignorance are explicitly known. We have to assume that we can meet someone on the street saved with the baptism of desire and invincible ignorance. Only because it is ‘explicitly known’ is it an exception to the dogma. If it was implicit it would not be an exception. The SSPX website says Fr.Leonard Feeney was wrong since those saved with the baptism of desire and invincible ignorance are exceptions to the dogma.

Fr. Leonard Feeney was correct in saying there were no exceptions to the dogmatic teaching. The dogma does not mention exceptions. Neither does Vatican Council II refer to explicit, visible cases of those saved in invincible ignorance or the baptism of desire. It refers to implicit cases known to God only.

CBCEW ECUMENICAL OFFICERS, CATECHISTS AGREE THAT THE BAPTISM OF DESIRE IS NOT AN EXCEPTION TO THE DOGMA OUTSIDE THE CHURCH THERE IS NO SALVATION
The Conference of Catholic Bishops Conference of England and Wales (CBCEW) ecumenical offfers and catechists agree that the baptism of desire is not an exception to the dogma outside the church there is no salvation.

Since those saved in invincible ignorance are unknown to us there cannot be two interpretations of the dogma, ‘ rigorist interpretation’ and non-rigorist interpretation. The Conference of Catholic Bishops of England and Wales (CBCEW) is back to the centuries old interpretation of the dogma;the only interpretation. The secular media refer to the ‘rigorist interpretation’ of the dogma assuming there is a second interpretation. They assume that the baptism of desire and those saved in invincible ignorance are defacto known to us and so contradict the original interpretation of the dogma extra ecclesiam nulla salus.

Representatives of Churches Together in England and Ireland have been informed of this issue.

Catholics bishops seem to agree with the ‘rigorist interpretation’ of the dogma extra ecclesiam nulla salus. They agree there is no visible baptism of desire and so the baptism of desire and those saved in invincible ignorance are not exceptions to the thrice- defined dogma which Pope Pius XII called an ‘infallible statement’.

These blog posts were sent to representatives of the CBEW asking for their comments. They have been sent to, among others, the:

General Secretariat lorraine.welch@cbcew.org.uk, Department of Dialogue and Unity dialunity@cbcew.org.uk, Department Administrator : grace.applewaithe@cbcew.org.uk

They accept that this is the teaching of the Magisterium. There are no denials. None of them claim that the baptism of desire is visible.

CAN YOU DIRECT ME TO THE TRACT OR ARTICLE IN WHICH FR.LEONARD FEENEY DENIES THE FAITH? “NO WE CANNOT”. THEY QUOTE OTHER SOURCES
The Bread of Life was published after the excommunication. He was excommunicated for disobedience and not heresy. The excommunication was lifted without him having to recant or change any of his writings.

Whatever be ones opinion on Fr. Leonard Feeney we can all agree that there is no visible baptism of desire and implicit baptism of desire is not an exception to the dogma outside the church there is no salvation.

People have different opinions about Fr. Leonard Feeney and they usually repeat what others have said or written about him. They are unable to provide any text written by him which is heretical.

The excommunication was for disobedience to Church authority. He refused to go to Rome when called, he refused to accept a transfer and he called the Archbishop Cardinal Richard Cushing a heretic. It was unbelievable at that time that a cardinal could teach heresy. Today, we have the example of Cardinal Walter Kaspar, Cardinal Carlo Martini S.J etc.

The Archbishop believed those saved in invincible ignorance and the baptism of desire were exceptions to the dogma and to Fr. Leonard Feeney’s traditional interpretation. For him the baptism of desire would be visible for it to be an exception to the dogma. This is the rejection of the dogma which says all need to convert into the Church for salvation. The Archbishop rejected the dogma, with his exceptions, which Pope Pius XII called the ‘infallible statement’ in the Letter of the Holy Office 1949. The Letter was addressed to the Archbishop and not Fr.Leonard Feeney. The pope was telling the Archbishop that all non Catholics in Boston need to convert into the Catholic Church to avoid the fires of Hell. The ‘dogma’ mentioned in the Letter did not mention any exceptions like the baptism of desire. This was an issue raised by Cardinal Richard Cushing and the Jesuits in Boston and which was then inserted in Vatican Council II . The Archbishop did not know the Faith or did not want to profess it.

The Church has accepted the baptism of desire (Council of Trent etc) but to claim that it is not implicit but explicit and is an exception to the dogma is heresy.

Fr. Leonard Feeney and the St. Benedict Center were disobedient as the Letter of the Holy Office 1949 mentions. They were disobedient but not heretical.

De facto everyone needs to enter the Church, as taught by the dogma. De jure a person can be saved with implicit baptism of desire and it would be known only to God. The baptism of water and teaching someone the Catholic Faith is explicit. The baptism of desire is never explicitly known to us.

So we accept the baptism of desire (Letter of the Holy Office, Council of Trent) and also the possibility of non Catholics being saved in invincible ignorance (Lumen Gentium 16) however we do not imply that they are exceptions to the dogma extra ecclesiam nulla salus. -Lionel Andrades

ERRORS IN THE CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH: OUTSIDE THE CHURCH NO SALVATION
The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) under the sub heading outside the church there is no salvation mentions invincible ignorance and the baptism of desire as exceptions. They are not defacto exceptions.

Vatican Council II also mentions invincible ignorance (LG 16) but nowhere implies that it is an exception to the dogma or the ordinary means of salvation.

The Catechism instead implies that those who are saved in invincible ignorance are visible and known to us, so the baptism of water is needed by only those who know about Jesus and the Church.

The text of the dogma extra ecclesiam nulla salus states that everyone needs to enter the Church. The text of the dogma defined three times is not included in the Catechism. This is all misleading.

To imply that the baptism of desire is a defacto exception to the dogma is heresy. It is indifferentism when one says non Catholics can be defacto saved in their religion and we know who these cases are. This teaching is not part of the Deposit of the Faith. It is irrational and a repititon of the Richard Cushing Error.

Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger in preparing the Catechism did not violate the Principle of Non Contradiction. Since defactro every one needs to enter the Church for salvation (Cantate Domino, Council of Florence) and dejure, in principle, in theory and known only to God a person can be saved in invincible ignorance and the baptism of desire.

Placing invincible ignorance and the baptism of desire under the subheading Outside the Church NO Salvation however implies that they are relevant to the dogma or defacto exceptions.

For the Catechism to say that the baptism of water is needed for only those who know about Jesus and the Church could imply that those saved in invincible ignorance are defacto known to us in the present time. It implies that we know these particular cases and so we cannot say that everyone on earth with no exception needs Catholic Faith and the baptism of desire for salvation: to avoid the fires of Hell.

Also to suggest that only those who ‘know’ need the baptism of water for salvation would imply that Fr. Leonard Feeney was excommunicated not for disobedience but for heresy. It would also imply that the excommunication was wrongly lifted by the Catholic Church without the priest having to recant or make changes in his writing. It also implies that the popes, saints and Fr. Leonard Feeney were wrong in saying everyone needs to be an explicit member of the Church for salvation. It would also be a contradiction of three Councils which defined the dogma in an extra ordinary mode. The ‘dogma’ is referred to in the Letter of the Holy Office 1949 as the ‘infallible statement’.

For a priest to knowingly say that there are defacto exceptions to the dogma extra ecclesiam nulla salus is a first class heresy and a mortal sin. He is refuting the Nicene Creed in which we pray, “I believe in one baptism for the forgiveness of sins” and “I believe in the Holy Spirit the Holy Catholic Church”. It was the Holy Spirit which guided the Magisterium of the Church to teach over the centuries that outside the church there is no salvation.

A priest, who knowingly continues in this error, even after being informed, is in manifest public heresy and is not to offer Mass without receiving absolution in the Confessional and making public amends; removing the sacrilege. Similarly it would be a sacrilege for a lay person knowingly in this error to receive the Eucharist.
