The L.A interpretation of Vatican Council II was a discovery for a young priest on Thursday afternoon
The
Lionel Andrades (L.A) interpretation of Vatican Council II was a discovery for
a young priest on Thursday afternoon. He was sitting alone on a bench of an ice
cream shop at the corner of Via 20 Settembre. He was waiting for someone. Then he saw
the colorful image placed on the front of my coat, as a I walked past him. Here it is. 1
The Catechism of the Catholic Church 846 says outside the Church there
is no salvation, I said. In Vatican Council II, Ad Gentes 7 says all need faith
and baptism for salvation. So Vatican Council II and the Catechism of the
Catholic Church have the same message as the old Church Councils at Florence
(1442) and Fourth Lateran Council (1215). The old Councils issued the dogma outside
the Church there is no salvation, I told him. So Vatican Council II has a continuity with the
past. It is not a rupture.
He was attentive.
I then brought in 'the obstacles'. Lumen Gentium 16 tells us a person can be saved in invincible ignorance and Unitatitis Reditigratio 3 says even other Christians, in imperfect communion with the Church, must not be excluded from salvation... But Lumen Gentium 16 and Unitatitis Redintigratio 3 are always hypothetical and speculative only. They refer to physically invisibile people. There are no physically visible cases . If any one was saved as such it could only be known to God.
So throughout Vatican Council II we have the orthodox passages alongside the passages which refer to hypothetical cases. If the orthodox passages are marked in blue and the hypothetical passages marked in red, then the red is not an exception for the blue. So Vatican Council II is orthodox and coherent.
The orthodox (blue) passages have a continuity with the Magisterium over the centuries and the red passages are not an obstacle.
He was moved.
I could notice it in his voice.
He was really grateful and said , "Grazie" - with a smile.
I responded "Prego" and moved on.
He got the same insight which was given to me and it was not at the university.
One day- when I am dead, he will use this information to find new ways of being a pastor but which are really old.
He will learn that the Councils, Creeds and Catechisms, can be interpreted in two different ways and he can avoid the irrational common one. - Lionel Andrades
