PROF.ROBERTO DE MATTEI DOES NOT ANSWER WRITTEN QUESTION AT CONFERENCE

A three day conference organised by the Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate, Italy began yesterday in Rome.

Prof. Roberto Mattei is the author of many books and the head of many organisations. He teaches at the Universita Europa di Roma, the university of the Legionaries of Christ. In his talk he said that we cannot interpret Vatican Council II as a complete break from Tradition.

He also observed that there are interpretations of Vatican Council II which just refer to the spirit of Vatican Council II, without any reference to text in Vatican Council II.

The values of infallibility given to Vatican Council II belong to the School of Bologna he said. Their opinion is not shared by Pope Benedict XVI who interprets Vatican Council II with a hermeneutic of continuity.

In the question and answer session in the evening the speakers of the day were available to answer written questions sent to them via the Franciscan Friars.

A written question in English and Italian was addressed to Prof. Mattei which asked: Vatican Council II needs to be interpreted in accord with Sacred Tradition. Also the ex cathedra dogma extra ecclesiam nulla salus(1) needs to be interpreted in accord with Tradition. The Bull Cantate Domino, Council of Florence, ex cathedra says everyone with no exception needs to enter the Catholic Church for salvation.Does he (Mattei) believe that all Muslims and other non Catholics need to enter the Catholic Church to go to Heaven and avoid Hell?

No answer.

Other questions were answered.

I have been writing to Mattei over the years. I have been sending him my literature so he knows what I was saying in the question.

It wasn’t just asking him for information. It was asking him to affirm the Faith. He was asked to give a testimony of the Catholic Faith and he was found wanting.

To deny the Faith when asked…?

‘Those who deny Me I will deny before the Father in heaven’

The professor denied the Faith last night.

Was he confused about Vatican Council II and extra ecclesiam nulla salus?

Does he interpret Lumen Gentium 16 as an irrational break from Tradition as did Fr. Hans Kung?

Kung interpreted LG 16 as referring to explicit invincible ignorance.

Yet we can reason that those saved in invincible ignorance are only known to go. It is explicit (visible) only for God and implicit (hidden) for us human beings.
Those also can attain to salvation who through no fault of their own do not know the Gospel of Christ or His Church, yet sincerely seek God and moved by grace strive by their deeds to do His will as it is known to them through the dictates of conscience.-LG 16

So it does not contradict the infallible teaching that everyone with no exception needs to enter the Catholic Church to avoid Hell.

So LG 16 is in accord with Sacred Tradition while Ad Gentes 7 says ‘all people’ need Catholic faith and the Baptism of water for salvation.

Therefore, all must be converted to Him, made known by the Church's preaching, and all must be inorporated into Him by baptism and into the Church which is His body. For Christ Himself "by stressing in express language the necessity of faith and baptism (cf. Mark 16:16;John 3:5), at the same time confirmed the necessity of the Church, into which men enter by baptism, as by a door.-AG 7, Vatican Council II

Vatican Council II is affirming extra ecclesiam nulla salus.

So which of these two interpretations of Vatican Council II does Prof. Roberto Mattei use?

1.

1. “There is but one universal Church of the faithful, outside which no one at all is saved.” (Pope Innocent III, Fourth Lateran Council, 1215). Ex cathedra.2.“We declare, say, define, and pronounce that it is absolutely necessary for the salvation of every human creature to be subject to the Roman Pontiff.” (Pope Boniface VIII, the Bull Unam Sanctam, 1302.).Ex cathedra.3.“The most Holy Roman Church firmly believes, professes and preaches that none of those existing outside the Catholic Church, not only pagans, but also Jews and heretics and schismatics, can have a share in life eternal; but that they will go into the eternal fire which was prepared for the devil and his angels, unless before death they are joined with Her; and that so important is the unity of this ecclesiastical body that only those remaining within this unity can profit by the sacraments of the Church unto salvation, and they alone can receive an eternal recompense for their fasts, their almsgivings, their other works of Christian piety and the duties of a Christian soldier. No one, let his almsgiving be as great as it may, no one, even if he pour out his blood for the Name of Christ, can be saved, unless he remain within the bosom and the unity of the Catholic Church.” (Pope Eugene IV, the Bull Cantate Domino, 1441.)
