Consubstantial with the Father
Q: In the Niceno-Constantinopolitan Creed, why has "one in being with the Father" been changed to "consubstantial with the Father?"
A: The new translation is more in keeping with the ancient Latin text of the Creed and a more accurate translation.
The bishops at the Council of Nicea (AD 325), in order to ensure that Jesus was professed as the eternal Son of God, equal to the Father, stated that he is "the Son of God, begotten from the Father, the only-begotten, that is from the substance of the Father, God from God, light from light, true God from true God, begotten not made, the same substance ( homoousion) with the Father..." The Creed of the Council of Constantinople (381), which is professed at all Sunday Masses and Solemnities within the Catholic Church, similarly stated: "We believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of the same substance ( homoousion) with the Father."
When these two ancient creeds were translated into Latin, the term " homoousion" was rendered as " consubstantialem," that is, "the same substance of the Father." Prior to the Second Vatican Council, the Latin " consubstantialem" was rendered as "consubstantial" within the English translation of the Creed. Many theologians and the Holy See thought that the term "consubstantial" was more in keeping with the Latin tradition and a more literal and accurate translation than the more recent "one in being."
This is in keeping with the mind of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, which published an Instruction, entitled Liturgiam Authenticam. It stated: "Certain expressions that belong to the heritage of the whole or of a great part of the ancient Church, as well as others that have become part of the general human patrimony, are to be respected by a translation that is as literal as possible" (no. 56).
In the Nicene Creed when we say ' I believe in one baptism for the forgiveness of sins' it was a reference to one baptism, the baptism of water. The baptism of desire is visible and repeatable. There is no known case of the baptism of desire. We cannot see any one saved with the baptism of desire. Nor can the baptism of desire be administered.The naptism of desire is only a possibility in our mind and not an objective person in 2020 saved outside the Church.
But in the Letter of the Holy Office 1949(LOHO) the cardinals assumed that there were visible non Catholics saved outside the Church with the baptism of desire and in invincible ignorance. So they projected BOD and I.I as being exceptions to EENS as it was known to the Magisterium in the 16th century.Invisible cases could not be exceptions.An exception has to exist to be an exception.
Vatican Council II accepted this error and also mentions BOD and I.I in Lumen Gentium and Ad Gentes as if they are relevant to 'all needing faith and baptism for salvation'(AG 7).
Cardinal Ratzinger furthered interpreted LG 16 and UR 3 etc as being exceptions to Feeneyite EENS in two papers of the International Theological Commission. He was assisted by Fr. Luiz Ladaria sj and Fr. Charles Morerod op.
So now when Catholics pray the Nicene Creed, ' I believe in one baptism for the forgiveness of sins' refers to three or more baptisms and they all exclude the baptism of water in the Catholic Church. They are the baptism of desire, baptism of blood , invincible ignorance, elements of sanctification and truth in other religions etc.
So this is not the understanding of the Nicene Creed over the centuries.

FSSP priests need to interpret the Nicene Creed with Feeneyism instead of Cushingism.Their bishops must be informed about this.
Feeneyism: It is the old theology and philosophical reasoning which says there are no known exceptions past or present, to the dogma extra ecclesiam nulla salus (EENS).There are no explicit cases to contradict the traditional interpretation of EENS.It is practical. There obviously are no known cases of the baptism of desire (BOD),baptism of blood(BOB) and being saved in invincible ignorance(I.I) in 2017.So there are no practical exceptions to EENS.Neither was BOD,BOB and I.I an exception to Feeneyite EENS in 1949 when the Letter of the Holy Office was issued to the Archbishop of Boston. The cardinals made an objective mistake.Similarly mentioning BOD and I.I in Vatican Council II (AG 7,LG 14) relative to the traditional teaching on salvation was superflous.
Cushingism: It is the new theology and philosophical reasoning.It assumes there are known exceptions, past and present, to the dogma EENS, on the need for all to formally enter the Church.It assumes that the baptism of desire etc are not hypothetical but objectively known.In principle hypothetical cases are objective in the present times.
