JESUIT AT THE CHIESA DEL GESU ROME SAYS THE BAPTISM OF DESIRE IS THE ORDINARY WAY OF SALVATION FOR NON CATHOLICS

Repeats message of Vice Rector Fr.Massimo Morreli S.J that the  pagans were saved before St. Francis Xavier arrived in Goa.

Fr. P.D Zanca, an elderly Jesuit priest who hears Confession at the Church in Rome which houses the tomb of St. Francis Xavier said today morning that the pagans in Goa, the former Portuguese Colony, were saved before the arrival of the Jesuits. Since the baptism of desire is the ordinary means of salvation.

Fr. Zanca affirms the Nicene Creed which says there is one baptism for the forgiveness of sins i.e. the baptism of water removes Original Sin and other sins.Yet he also maintains that the pagans and non Catholics do not need the baptism of water and Catholic Faith to go to Heaven.

He agrees Jesus identifies himself with the Church and the Church is necessary for salvation. He also agrees that Vatican Council II (LG 14, AG 7) indicates Catholics Faith and the baptism of water is the ordinary means of salvation. So he contradicts what he says earlier.

For him pagans and non Catholics today are saved in general in their religions with the baptism of desire. He also nominally accepts the dogma extra ecclesiam nulla salus, unlike in the past when he rejected it.

Fr. Zanca says in the past the Church taught that non Catholics with no exception needed Catholic Faith and the baptism of water to avoid Hell. Now the Church teaches he said that they are all saved through the baptism of desire.

All  one had to do he observed was believe in Jesus, this is all that is required. He indicated that the Church’s present teaching is similar to that of the Protestants i.e. just believe in Jesus.

It may be mentioned that when the Chief Rabbinate of Israel broke relations with  the Vatican and ended Dialogue over the issue of the Revised Good Friday Prayer for the Conversion of the Jews, Cardinal Walter Kaspar wrote a front page article in the L’Osservatore Romano. This report was approved by Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, Vatican Secretary of State.

The report indicated that Vatican Council II teaches that non Catholics can be saved in general through invincible ignorance (LG 16). So Jews do not have to convert into the Church in the present times. Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco, President, of the Italian Conference of Bishops said that this doctrine was approved by Pope Benedict XVI. This was reported in the daily newspaper of the bishop’s conference, Avvenire.

Those Catholics who do not hold to this new teaching of the Catholic Church are threatened with leftist anti Semitism, anti proselytism and racist laws.-Lionel Andrades

Non Catholics in Goa were in invincible ignorance before St.Francis Xavier arrived so were already on the way to be saved- Fr.Massimo Morelli S.J, Vice Rector, Chiesa del Gesu, Rome.
