SOCIETY OF ST.PIUS X CAUSING CONFUSION ON ECUMENISM

Christians at Assisi could be saved in invincible ignorance and the baptism of desire.

Invincible Ignorance and the baptism of desire are not exceptions to the dogma but explicitly known invincible ignorance and the baptism of desire are exceptions. So one has to imply that the baptism of desire and invincible ignorance are explicitly known. We have to assume that we can meet someone on the street saved with the baptism of desire and invincible ignorance. Only because it is ‘explicitly known’ is it an exception to the dogma. If it was implicit it would not be an exception. The SSPX website says Fr.Leonard Feeney was wrong since those saved with the baptism of desire and invincible ignorance are exceptions to the dogma.

The Society of St. Pius X (SSPX) is causing confusion on ecumenism by suggesting that Christians who were present at the inter faith meeting last month at Assisi along with Pope Benedict XVI, do not have to enter the Catholic Church for salvation- since they could be saved with the baptism of desire or in invincible ignorance.(1)

The SSPX website suggests those saved in invincible ignorance and the baptism of desire are exceptions to the dogma extra ecclesiam nulla salus.

Fr.Francois Laisney of the SSPX, says on the SSPX webpage, that Fr.Leonard Feeney was wrong to say that everyone with no exception needs the baptism of water for salvation. These are exceptions to the dogma for them.

According to Fr.Laisney there are some people today who do not need the baptism of water since they are among the ‘exceptions’. He assumes that we know who these ‘exceptions’ are. Since only if we knew them they could be exceptions to the dogmatic teaching that every one needs to convert into the Church for salvation.

For the SSPX it is possible that the Orthodox Christians and Protestants who were present at Assisi could be exceptions to the dogma extra ecclesiam nulla salus.

The SSPX is also selling a book written by Fr.Laisney in which he suggests that those saved in invincible ignorance and the baptism of desire are exceptions to the dogma.

The SSPX webpage also says that Fr.Leonard Feeny was  condemned for heresy by Pope Pius XII in the Letter of the Holy Office 1949.He was condemned according to Fr.Laisney for saying that there were no exceptions (baptism of desire etc) to the dogma.
http://www.sspx.org/miscellaneous/feeneyism/fr_feeney_catholic_doctrine.htm

Yet nowhere in the Letter of the Holy Office is it said that Fr. Leonard Feeney was excommunicated for heresy. It was for disobedience.

The Letter of the Holy Office supported Fr.Leonard Feeney by mentioning the ‘dogma’, the infallible’ teaching. The dogma like Fr. Leonard Feeney says all non Catholics need to convert into the Church for salvation. The dogma does not mention any exceptions. So how could he be condemned for this 'error' as the SSPX suggests?

It is not an ‘error’ to say that there are no exceptions. The saints and the popes including Pope Pius XII said there were no exceptions- they referred to the dogma.

The Letter of the Holy Office mentions those who can be saved ‘in certain circumstances’ with the baptism of desire etc. These cases are known only to God so they are not exceptions to the dogma. They do not contradict the dogma.

So it is an error in ecumenism to suggest that there could be some known ‘exceptions’.

The SSPX could issue a clarification saying:

1.Those saved in invincible ignorance and baptism of desire are not exceptions to the dogma.

2.Fr.Leonard Feeney was not excommunicated of heresy.

3.The Letter of the Holy Office 1949 mentions the ‘dogma’ the ‘infallible’ teaching which indicates everyone needs to be a visible member of the Church for salvation. The dogma does not mention any exceptions.(There were three defined dogmas. The Fourth Lateran Council, the Bull Unam Sanctam, Cantate Domino,Council of Florence 1441).

4.No magisterial document refers to cases of non Catholics being saved explicitly with the baptism of desire or in invincible ignorance. The baptism of desire and invincible ignorance can only be exceptions to the dogma if they are known explicitly.

The SSPX needs to correct this misinformation. This is not a theological issue but a factual, objective error. (a) We do not know any non Catholic saved in invincible ignorance etc and (b) the Letter of the Holy Office does not state that he was excommunicated for heresy.

Those saved in invincible ignorance and the baptism of desire are not exceptions to Vatican Council II (Lumen Gentium 14, Ad Gentes 7) and neither are they exceptions to the dogma extra ecclesiam nulla salus. Vatican Council II says all need to enter the Church for salvation and the dogma also indicates that the Catholic Church is the ordinary means of salvation. In inter religious dialogue it must be remembered that the Church is the 'ordinary means' of salvation.(Redemptoris Missio 55)

The SSPX is presently in first class heresy when they claim that those saved in invincible ignorance and with the baptism of desire are defacto exceptions to the dogma extra ecclesiam nulla salus. This is also contrary to the Syllabus of Errors and brings on an anathema. It is a first class heresy in the  Hiearchy of truths since it contradicts the Nicene Creed.-Lionel Andrades
