Saint for all seasons — and synodsusers to support our news reporting. 

If St. Teresa of Ávila, the 16th century nun, could time-travel to this era, when Pachamama idols are worshipped in Vatican gardens and silver coins are issued in her honor, she would not be a happy person. "Life is like a night in a bad inn," she is to have once said, and she would find many things about the state of Church affairs bad indeed.

Teresa was a great protector of the Catholic faith — as a child desiring death by martyrdom — and was deeply upset by the "Lutherans," a term she liberally used to describe all those breaking from the Faith. She thought the Devil was snagging them away to Hell and was worried about their souls. She wanted to rescue them through penance until she could find more effective measures.

Cardinal Reinhard Marx and the left-leaning German synod–bishops might find their current plans lambasted by this faithful, tireless nun who reformed the Carmelite order, wanting to do all she could for Christ's Church on earth knowing there would be time to rest in Heaven — although she is said to have desired doing God's work in the hereafter as well.

It is interesting — even entertaining — to imagine what she might say to the intellectual hefties of the German Church who are now making mass change to the "face of the Church."

She might well suggest that they start reforming the Church by reforming themselves — doing penance and donning discalced sandals as a good way to start.

But St. Teresa has not time-traveled to Rome, and the progressive bishops and their U.N. associates would likely describe her take on matters as "out of touch" — as they have even described Jesus.

Or they might argue — were she to be dropped into their world — she would no doubt see things as they do, appropriating her as they have St. Francis of Assisi. 

Or they might simply shun her as a "dragon traditionalist" whose life represents a backward and irrelevant past.

 

But to ignore Teresa would be to ignore the mind-boggling contributions she left behind.

Search for Truth in Christ

Born of a converso family in 16th-century Spain, Teresa was in her teens when she left her home — to the consternation of her father — to join the Carmelites in Ávila.

She discovered a convent of ease and even luxury, as was often the case in those days. The convents often served as places where well-to-do women who did not marry came to live, replete with their riches and servants.

When she was 47 years old, she founded her first reformed convent named for St. Joseph, for whom she had a lifelong devotion.

Teresa herself was, at first, part of this station. But it is said that a statue of our suffering Lord — which exists to this day in Ávila — gave her deep spiritual pause and caused her to ask: "Who is this Man? And why is He suffering?"

The asking and the answering of this question were to lead to Teresa's mystical prayer experiences, to her writing masterpieces of Catholic and Spanish literature and to the successful and long-lasting reformation of 17 Carmelite convents throughout Spain.

Definitive 'How-To' on Prayer

A look at Bernini's famous sculpture in the Cornaro Chapel of the church of Santa Maria della Vittoria in Rome does much to describe the quality and timber of Teresa's prayer life. It appears that what Teresa described in her biography about union with God, Bernini dramatized in marble. 

Teresa wrote that she saw in an angel's hand: 

a long spear of gold, and at the point there seemed to be a little fire. He appeared to me to be thrusting it at times into my heart, and to pierce my very entrails; when he drew it out, he seemed to draw them out also, and to leave me all on fire with a great love of God. The pain was so great, that it made me moan; and yet so surpassing was the sweetness of this excessive pain, that I could not wish to be rid of it ... .

Considered Spain's most eloquent writer next to Cervantes, Teresa wrote Las Moradas (The Mansions), which represents as thorough a treatise on how to pray — starting with rote prayer to union with God — as anything any Church Father has yet written. It was inspired by her vision of the soul as a diamond in the shape of a castle containing seven mansions, which she interpreted as the journey of faith through seven stages, culminating in union with God. It remains the epic "go-to" guide on how to pray.

Ecstasy of St. Teresa

The diminutive nun also gave her Carmelite sisters The Way of Perfection, calling it a "living book," in which she taught her daughter nuns how to progress through prayer. In it, she gave an explication of the Our Father that helps "perfecters" of prayer life to this day. As Teresa said: "As we repeat the Our Father so many times ... let us delight in it." 

Dogged Reformer

Teresa's prayer life was not overshadowed by her effective administrative skills, which sought to purify Church structures — something today's Vatican planners might well emulate.

Taking on the laxity and decadence of her order, when she was 47 years old she founded her first reformed convent named for St. Joseph, for whom she had a life-long devotion.

Teresa went on to found and reform 16 more convents throughout Spain, all against the backdrop of the Protestant revolt sweeping Europe and the Spanish Inquisition.

Teresa eschewed the titles aristocratic women brought with them to the convent, choosing to be called Teresa of Jesus and urging her sisters to follow suit. 

Legacy of Influence

Not often discussed is that Teresa is responsible for a lineage of modern Catholic holy women and saints of great influence.

When I had finished the book, I said to myself: 'This is the truth.'

Saint Thérèse of Lisieux (1875–1898), the French Carmelite, was named for Teresa, and took as her religious name Sister Thérèse of the Child Jesus.

St. Thérèse, Edith Stein, Dorothy Day and Mother Teresa 

Edith Stein (1891–1942) is said to have converted from atheism after reading Teresa's biography and eventually took the name of Sr. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross. Stein said, "When I had finished the book, I said to myself: 'This is the truth.'" 

Dorothy Day (1891–1980) narrates in her autobiography The Long Loneliness that after Teresa's biography fell into her hands, her life direction changed course. Day also named her daughter Tamar Terese in honor of the 16th-century saint.

And, of course, Mother Teresa of Calcutta's name is a nod to all of her above Teresian namesakes.

Multidimensional Mystic

Teresa is also known for her down-to-earth sense of humor. One often-quoted quip is embedded in Teresa making her way to a convent in the middle of a rainstorm. She slipped down an embankment and fell into the mud. She looked to Heaven and said to her Maker, "If this is how You treat Your friends, no wonder You have so few of them!"

So fully dimensional is the person of Teresa of Jesus — nun, reformer, sister, Mother, writer, mystic, friend to John of the Cross and administrator — her feast day is not easily documented in words.

Fundamentals of Catholic Dogma by Ludwig Ott (1953) (Baronius) and The Catholic Church and Salvation(1958) by Mons. Joseph Clifford Fenton : authors were not aware of the irrational premise, inference and conclusion

Fundamentals of Catholic Dogma by Ludwig Ott was written in 1952.This was after the 1949 Letter of the Holy Office(LOHO) was made public,  with its irrational premise, inference and conclusion.So Ott would have picked up the error. In 1958 Mons. Joseph Clifford Fenton wrote The Catholic Church and Salvation. He has mentioned the LOHO in this book and was not aware of the false premise.

Baronius Press publishes Fundamentals of Catholic Dogma with an approval given by Bishop Athanasius Schneider and Prof. Robert Fastiggi.

Both of them also interpret Vatican Council II with the same irrational premise, inference and conclusion.

I have mentioned this before 1 but there is no comment from either of them or denial from Baronius Press. The book by Ludwig Ott is not available free on line.It can also be bought at Amazon.

Luwig Ott's Fundamentals of Catholic Dogmauses Cushingite philosophy and theology.So it assumes that unknown cases of the baptism of desire, baptism of blood and being saved in invincible ignorance are known exceptions to the dogma extra ecclesiam nulla salus(EENS), as it was known to the popes and saints of the past.

For the Magisterium in the 16th century, EENS was Feeneyite and not Cushingite, since BOD, BOB and I.l were Feeneyite and not Cushingite.

So this is a theological and doctrinal flaw in Ott's Fundamentals of Catholic Dogma and it,like the Arian heresy of the past,  has spread throughout the Catholic Church today.

It is also with Cushingism that Bishop Athanasius Schneider and Prof. Robert Fastiggi interpret Vatican Council II and EENS.

Prof. Fastiggi is critical of Fr. Leonard Feeney. But Fr.Feeney did not say that he could see invisible people on earth, he refused to say that people in Heaven were objective exceptions on earth to the traditional interpretation of EENS. He did  not interpret BOD,BOB and I.I with Cushingism,like Prof. Fastiggi, Ralph Martin and Phillip Blosser and the rest of the faculty at the Sacred Heart Major Seminary in Detroit, USA.

In 1949 the Holy Office made a mistake when it assumed invisible cases of BOD, BOB and I.I were visible exceptions to Feeneyite EENS. It also created a schism with the past popes. The Cushingite error was repeated in Vatican Council II by Council Fathers and Cardinal Ratzinger upheld the mistake in the Catechism of the Catholic Church (1994), Redemptoris Missio, Dominus Iesus, Balamand Declaration, Code of Canon Law (1983) and two theological papers of the International Theological Commission.It was a direct attack on the dogma EENS with the use of an irrational premise to create a non traditional conclusion.

Ott's Fundamentals of Catholic Dogma is used in religions formation by Catholic traditionalists and liberals.

Like the apologists John Hardon, Monsgr. Joseph Clifford Fenton and Fr. William Most, Ott did not know that BOD, BOB and I.I were being interpreted by the liberal theologians as a rupture with Tradition.They did this by confusing what is invisible as visible, implicit as explicit and hypothetical as being defacto and objective known in the present times.So their narrative was that Mystici Corporis, Quanta Cura and the Catechisms of Pius X and Trent contradicted Feeneyite EENS when BOD, BOB and I.I were mentioned. But this was false. Since BOD, BOB and I.I can only be hypothetical. This is a given. This was how St. Thomas Aquinas and St. Augustine understood it.

Fr.John Hardon used this flawed reasoning also in the interpretation of the Catechism of the Catholic Church(1994)  and Vatican Council II.

For me, the Catechism(1994) and Vatican Council II can be interpreted with Feeneyism, that is , without the false premise.So the conclusion is not a rupture with Tradition.

A few weeks ago Baronius Press released what it describes as a new edition of Ludwig Ott's Fundamentals of Catholic Dogma. Although based on the original translation by Dr. Patrick Lynch it has been "fully revised and updated" by Dr. Robert Fastiggi, apparently in the light of Ott's 1969 German text of the Fundamentals. The preface to the new edition by Dr. Fastiggi -- full text on the Baronius Press website -- describes at length the revisions made to the translation. In the preface, Fastiggi notes that "(w)hile Fr. Ott made some revisions in 1969, it would be wrong to find in these any notable change in his theological posture from the decade prior to Vatican II. Ludwig Ott always remained faithful to the Church’s perennial Magisterium, and he is careful to distinguish theological speculations from the constant teaching of the Church"

Lefebvrists do not affirm Feeneyite EENS. The Lefebvrsits promote Cushingite EENS and Vatican Council II (Cushingite). Vatican Council II (Cushingite/Lefebvrist) is not in schism with EENS ( Cushingite-BOD, BOB and I.I are exceptions). Also he has not mentioned this point some 10 years back. He's probably read it on my blog. Vatican Council II(Feeneyite) does not contradict the Syllabus of Errors for me.He has not mentioned this since there would be confusion with the SSPX. They heretically interpret Magisterial documents, Creeds and Catechisms, with Cushingism. When Archbishop Carlo Vigano said Vatican Council II is schismatic he probably read it on my blog and then kept the issue ambiguous.Since how can Vatican Council II be schismatic for him, a Lefebvrist ? Lefebvrists do not affirm Feeneyite EENS.

Tell Cardinal Dolan to interpret LG 8, LG 14, LG 16, UR 3, NA 2, GS 22 etc as being hypothetical cases and his whole world will come crashing down in New York

I am affirming the Catholic Faith. I interpret Magisterial documents rationally so there is no rupture with Tradition. I affirm the first part of the Letter of the Holy Office (LOHO) and reject the second part , which uses an irrational premise, to contradict the first part, and traditional extra ecclesiam nulla salus(EENS). My Profession of Faith is Feeneyite and not Cushingite like the rest of the Catholic Church. If the two popes violate the Principle of Non Contradiction it still is a violation. I avoid this error. If the cardinals and bishops make an objective mistake, it still is an objective mistake. I am not in schism with the past popes on EENS
