Cardinal Luiz Ladaria, Bishop Charles Morerod O.P Oath of Fidelity: to dissent

Profession of Faith allows for dissent on ecclesiology and baptism

Cardinal Luiz Ladaria S.J the Secretary of the Vatican Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith has been the President of the International Theological Commission (ITC), Vatican. Bishop Charles Morerod O.P has been the Secretary of the ITC.

They have had published two papers which are available on the ITC website. In these two theological papers they have written that the Catholic Church no more teaches exclusive salvation. Since there can be those saved in invincible ignorance (LG 16) etc. So there are known exceptions to the dogma extra ecclesiam nulla salus.

So when they made their Profession of Faith and took an Oath of Fidelty they recited the Nicene Constantinople Creed in which we pray ‘I believe in one baptism for the forgiveness of sin’. However they really meant that not every one on earth needs the baptism of water for salvation. There could be known people saved in invincible ignorance etc. So in actuality there is not one baptism of water for the forgiveness of sin. There are known exceptions in the present times.

There understanding of the Church is also different, even though in the Profession of Faith they said ‘ I believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.(1)

There understanding of Church is based on the false assumption that we know cases of non Catholics saved in invincible ignorance and the baptism of desire and so Vatican Council II (LG 16) and Pope Pius XII's Letter of the Holy Office 1949 have mentioned known exceptions to exclusive salvation in only the Catholic Church.(2)
There understanding of Church (ecclesiology) is that every one on earth with no exception does not need to enter the Church for salvation. The holy catholic and apostolic Church is not necessary for the salvation of all people with no exception.

So they have made their Profession of Faith denying the traditional teaching of the Church on baptism and ecclesiology. This is really a Profession of the Denial of the Faith.

1.
10. Exclusivist ecclesiocentrism—the fruit of a specific theological system or of a mistaken understanding of the phrase extra ecclesiam nulla salus—is no longer defended by Catholic theologians after the clear statements of Pius XII and Vatican Council II on the possibility of salvation for those who do not belong visibly to the Church (cf, e.g., LG 16; GS 22).-International Theological Commission, Christianity and the World Religions 1997. (1)
Neither does Vatican Council II or PopePius XII state anywhere that there are known exceptions to the dogma extra ecclesiam nulla salus or that we know personally cases of those saved in invincible ignorance or the baptism of desire.

International Theological Commission (ITC) makes an objective, factual error in two of its published documents. Could they also be wrong about Limbo?

When I meet a non Catholic I know he needs Catholic Faith and the baptism of water for salvation. How can I judge if he is a case of necessity of means or precept?

When I meet a non Catholic I cannot judge if he is going to be saved in invincible ignorance, a good conscience, the baptism of desire, imperfect communion with the Church, the seeds of the Word, perfect contrition etc. I know he needs Catholic Faith and the baptism of water for salvation(to avoid Hell) (AG 7).

The baptism of water is visible, tangible and repeatable. You cannot give someone ‘the baptism’ of desire or blood.

In a sense, the baptism of desire and all these ‘exceptional cases’ are not even an issue relative to the need of the baptism of water for all with no known exceptions. The baptism of desire is irrelevant.-Lionel Andrades

SSPX WEBSITE: ' I believe in three baptisms for the forgiveness of sins’ ?

So when the SSPX bishops and priests recite their Oath of Fidelity  to Pope Benedict XVI and they are asked to say aloud the Nicene Constantinople Creed, which we pray in Church, they will say 'I believe in one baptism for the forgiveness of sin’ and mean ‘I believe in three baptism for the forgiveness of sin, the baptism of water, desire and blood’.

Fr. Joseph Pfeiffer on the SSPX website,THE THREE BAPTISMS writes that Fr.Leonard Feeney in his 1952 book, Bread of Life, states on p.25:

It is now: Baptism of Water, or damnation! If you do not desire that Water, you cannot be justified. And if you do not get it, you cannot be saved."
Yes without the baptism of water no one on earth can be saved and we cannot give anyone the baptism of desire or judge who has a genuine baptism of blood (martyrdom). So obviously any non Catholic you meet needs the baptism of water for salvation. So Fr.Leonard Feeney was correct.

The baptism of desire can never ever be an exception to the need for the baptism of water. Since we cannot know any such case.

So when the SSPX bishops and priests take their oarth of fidelity to Pope Benedict XVI and they are asked to recite the Nicene Constantinople Creed they will say 'I believe in one baptism for the forgiveness of sin’ and mean ‘I believe in three baptism for the forgiveness of sin, the baptism of water, desire and blood’.

The baptism of desire can only be a possibility known to God and can never ever be known to us so it is not a defacto substitute on earth for the baptism of water. Every one needs the baptism of water for salvation and there are no known exceptions.

No one is likely to object when the SSPX members recite the Nicene Creed since no one objects to the two errors of Pope Benedict XVI in Light of the World p.107:-

1) He assumes that those saved in invincible ignorance etc are exceptions to the dogma extra ecclesiam nulla salus and to Ad Gentes 7, Vatican Council II even though we do not know any of these cases saved in invincible ignorance etc. Since we do not know any of these cases saved they cannot be explicit exceptions on earth.

2) The pope says Jews do not have to convert in the present times and the Revised Good Friday Prayer is not for their conversion while they live .This contradicts the Bible (John 3:5,Mk:16:16 etc),Vatican Council II(AG 7), the dogma extra ecclesiam nulla salus, the Catechism of the Catholic Church 845,846, Dominus Iesus 20.

The pope denies the Faith in public and expects the SSPX to do the same. There is now a foreign doctrine on the Jews which is not part of the Deposit of the Faith. Yet all the religious have signed a Profession of Faith/Oath of Fidelity. They have all recited the Nicene Creed which says ‘I believe in one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.’ And yet the Jews do not need the baptism of water in the present time 2012 ?

The pope expects the SSPX to accept Vatican Council II when the Council indicates Jews need to convert for salvation. (AG 7).The pope has never said this clearly in public.

Cardinal William Levada, Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF) never issued a clarification over the pope’s error on the Jews.

Vatican Council II says all need Catholic Faith and the baptism of water for salvation (AG 7) and this includes the Jews. It says the Church is ‘the new people of God’ (NA 4) and the Church of Christ is the Catholic Church (LG 8).It does not state that we know cases of non Catholics saved in invincible ignorance or a good conscience(LG 16) or that this contradicts the dogma extra ecclesiam nulla salus or AG 7.

Why does the Vatican not allow the SSPX and all religious communities to affirm the dogma extra ecclesiam nulla salus and also implicit baptism of desire etc. Implicit baptism of desire, not being explicit, does not contradict the defined dogma outside the church no salvation.

All the popes, Church Councils including Vatican Council II,like Fr.Leonard Feeney held the ‘rigorist interpretation’ of extra ecclesiam nulla salus : invincible ignorance (LG 16) is not an exception to the dogma

With invincible ignorance and the baptism of desire ‘out of the way’ we can realize that the Catholic Church has not retracted the thrice defined dogma extra ecclesiam nulla salus.

PROFESSION OF FAITH and THE OATH OF FIDELITY

ON ASSUMING AN OFFICE TO BE EXERCISED IN THE NAME OF THE CHURCH
Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As conforming to Pope John Paul II's Apostolic Letter Motu Proprio Ad Tuendam Fidem, this Profession of Faith and Oath of Fidelity supercedes the Profession and Oath of 1989.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I. PROFESSION OF FAITH

I, N., with firm faith believe and profess everything that is contained in the Symbol of faith: namely:

I believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is seen and unseen. I believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten not made, one in Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation, he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. I believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. I acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

With firm faith, I also believe everything contained in the Word of God, whether written or handed down in Tradition, which the Church, either by a solemn judgement or by the ordinary and universal Magisterium, sets forth to be believed as divinely revealed.

I also firmly accept and hold each and everything definitively proposed by the Church regarding teaching on faith and morals.

Moreover, I adhere with religious submission of will and intellect to the teachings which either the Roman pontiff or the College of Bishops enunciate when they exercise their authentic Magisterium, even if they do not intend to proclaim these teachings by a definitive act.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

II. OATH OF FIDELITY ON ASSUMING AN OFFICE TO BE EXERCISED IN THE NAME OF THE CHURCH

(Formula to be used by the Christian faithful mentioned in Canon 833, nn. 5-8)

I, N., in assuming the office of __________, promise that in my words and in my actions I shall always preserve communion with the Catholic Church.

With great care and fidelity I shall carry out the duties incumbent on me toward the Church, both universal and particular, in which, according to the provisions of the law, I have been called to exercise my service.

In fulfilling the charge entrusted to me in the name of the Church, I shall hold fast to the deposit of faith in its entirety; I shall faithfully hand it on and explain it, and I shall avoid any teachings contrary to it.

I shall follow and foster the common discipline of the entire Church and I shall maintain the observance of all ecclesiastical laws, especially those contained in the Code of Canon Law.

With Christian obedience I shall follow what the Bishops, as authentic doctors and teachers of the faith, declare, or what they, as those who govern the Church, establish.

I shall also faithfully assist the diocesan Bishops, so that the apostolic activity, exercised in the name and by mandate of the Church, may be carried out in communion with the Church.

So help me God, and God's Holy Gospels on which I place my hand.

(Variations in the fourth and fifth paragraphs of the formulary, for use by those members of the Christian faithful indicated in can. 833, n. 8).

I shall foster the common discipline of the entire Church and I shall insist on the observance of all ecclesiastical laws, especially those contained in the Code of Canon Law.

With Christian obedience I shall follow what the Bishops, as authentic doctors and teachers of the faith, declare, or what they, as those who govern the Church, establish. I shall also — with due regard for the character and purpose of my institute — faithfully assist the diocesan Bishops, so that the apostolic activity, exercised in the name and by mandate of the Church, may be carried out in communion with the Church.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NOTE: Canon 833, Nos. 5-8 obliges the following to make the profession of faith: vicars general, episcopal vicars and judicial vicars; "at the beginning of their term of office, pastors, the rector of a seminary and the professors of theology and philosophy in seminaries; those to be promoted to the diaconate"; "the rectors of an ecclesiastical or Catholic university at the beginning of the rector's term of office"; and, "at the beginning of their term of office, teachers in any universities whatsoever who teach disciplines which deal with faith or morals"; and "superiors in clerical religious institutes and societies of apostolic life in accord with the norm of the constitutions."
