The baptism of blood could never be an exception to EENS. Since it is known only to God and is a hypothetical case for us. It cannot be seen in the present times to be an exception.

Term

BAPTISM OF BLOOD

Definition

Martyrdom in the case of a person who died for the Christian faith before he or she could receive the sacrament. The effects of martyrdom of blood are the complete remission of sin and the title to immediate entrance into heaven. The expression entered the Christian vocabulary during the first three centuries when many catechumens awaiting baptism and pagans suddenly converted to the Christian faith were martyred before they could receive formal baptism of water.

Lionel:
Yes I accept this.
Of course for you and me this would today be a hypothetical case.
Something that happened in the past and if it happens today it would only be known to God.
So when the popes and saints referred to it, it  was with goodwill and speculation, since as human beings we can only hope in faith. When answering questions, the popes and the saints knew that finally it would only be God who would know.
So when the popes spoke about this subject, when asked about extra ecclesiam nulla salus (EENS), they were not referring to an exception to EENS.
It could never be an exception. Since a hypothetical case is not known in the present times to be an exception.

It was the liberal theologians who referred to the baptism of blood(Baltimore Catechism) and they being exceptions to EENS(Letter of the Holy Office 1949 to the Archbishop of Boston).
They mixed up what was invisible as being visible, what was unknown as being known.
Then they concluded that there was known salvation outside the Church, so outside the Church there was salvation for them.
This was the error the liberal theolgians repeated at Vatican Council II and Pope Benedict XVI supported it in March 2016(Avvenire) when he said that EENS was no more like it was for the missionaries in the 16th century, with there being salvation outside the Church. So where was there a need for Mission he asked, wrongly suggesting that Vatican Council II indicated them. For him there was ' a development' with Vatican Council II with his New Theology, Cushingite Theology.he interpreted hypothetical cases(LG 16, UR 3 etc) as being known persons.Invisible cases of the baptism of desire(LG 14) and invincible ignorance(LG 16) were mistaken as being visible. This is now official. It is magisterial heresy and changes the interpretation of the Nicene Creed too.
