If Archbishops Morandi and Di Noia at the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith(CDF) insist that the Catechism of the Catholic Church ( n.847-848) are exceptions to the traditional, centuries old interpretation of extra ecclesiam nulla salus(EENS), they would be trying to test our intelligence. Those who through no fault of their own do not know Christ or his Church and who may be saved are known only to God.So CCC 847-848 are not exceptions to 16th century EENS

Those who through no fault of their own do not know Christ or his Church and who may be saved are known only to God.So CCC 847-848 are not exceptions to 16th century EENS.

The CDF has made a human error. This cannot be magisterial. The CCC indicates in an official letter to  Brother Andre Marie MICM that CCC 847-848 ( the case of the unknown person being saved outside the Church in invincible ignorance) refers to known non Catholics saved outside the Church. The Letter has been posted on the website of the Diocese of Manchester, USA.

Being saved in invincible ignorance is only a precept for us . There is no real person on earth as such.
We cannot say that any particular person in 2019, who through no fault of their own does not know Christ or his Church  will be saved.Neither can we say that a particular person who has died and through no fault of his own did not know Christ or his Church, is now in Heaven.

Here is what the CDF says in the official letter (Oct.20,2016) to Brother Andre Marie MICM.(Emphasis in red)

As the Congregation stated in our April 15 letter to you, which the Congregation also shared with Bishop Libasci, the principle "Extra Ecclesiam Nulla Salus" must be interpreted according to the official doctrine of the Church, as it is summarized with clarity in the Catechism of the Catholic Church (#846-#848) and, more in detail, in the Declaration Dominus Jesus (#20-#22). The Catechism of the Catholic Church emphasizes that all salvation comes from Christ through the Church, which is the Body of Christ, the Sacrament of Salvation (cf. CCC #846). The paragraph that follows, however, is equally binding, as it considers those who, through no fault of their own, do not know Christ and his Church and states that those too have the possibility of obtaining eternal salvation (cf. CCC #847). This being stated, the Church certainly has a perennial obligation and sacred right to evangelize all men (cf. CCC #848). 1

The possibility of obtaining eternal salvation is only a precept. It is subjective. It is theoretical. It is not a known person saved outside the Catholic Church. So CCC 847 does not contradict the strict interpretation of the dogma extra ecclesiam nulla salus.

Those who through no fault of their own do not know Christ or his Church and who may be saved are known only to God. They are not objective cases on earth. They are not practical exceptions to the 'rigorist interpretation' of the dogma EENS.

III. THE CHURCH IS CATHOLIC
"Outside the Church there is no salvation"

How are we to understand this affirmation, often repeated by the Church Fathers?335 Re-formulated positively, it means that all salvation comes from Christ the Head through the Church which is his Body:Basing itself on Scripture and Tradition, the Council teaches that the Church, a pilgrim now on earth, is necessary for salvation: the one Christ is the mediator and the way of salvation; he is present to us in his body which is the Church. He himself explicitly asserted the necessity of faith and Baptism, and thereby affirmed at the same time the necessity of the Church which men enter through Baptism as through a door. Hence they could not be saved who, knowing that the Catholic Church was founded as necessary by God through Christ, would refuse either to enter it or to remain in it.336
335.

Cf. Cyprian, Ep. 73.21:PL 3,1169; De unit.:PL 4,509-536.
336.

LG 14; cf. Mk 16:16Jn 3:5.

This affirmation is not aimed at those who, through no fault of their own, do not know Christ and his Church:Those who, through no fault of their own, do not know the Gospel of Christ or his Church, but who nevertheless seek God with a sincere heart, and, moved by grace, try in their actions to do his will as they know it through the dictates of their conscience — those too may achieve eternal salvation.337
337.

LG 16; cf. DS 3866-3872.

"Although in ways known to himself God can lead those who, through no fault of their own, are ignorant of the Gospel, to that faith without which it is impossible to please him, the Church still has the obligation and also the sacred right to evangelize all men."338
338.

AG 7; cf. Heb 11:61 Cor 9:16.
